Energy in the society

1. Energy worldwide
   • Note that several strange units are in use!
   • After this course you should at least have heard the word "exergy".
2. Energy supply---different fuels
   • What fraction of the world's energy comes from fossil fuels?
3. Technologies for renewable energy
   • Should it be possible to use batteries in airplanes? Compare the energy densitites!
   • I mention three methods for green energy: wind power, photovoltaics, and concentrated solar power. Which of these is the biggest? How does the power from that source compare to the world's need for energy? (Note that "installed power" cannot be translated to "average power".)
   • Here is a video which advertises the world's largest plant for concentrated solar power. It is fascinating (and would have looked even better if they had not written mW in place of MW).
4. Electricity in vehicles
   • What do you think we could expect from the future?
